1. Thermostat Set Incorrectly or Malfunctioning
A wrong thermostat setting is the most overlooked reason a furnace stops producing heat — the system can’t heat your home if it isn’t being told to. Verify the settings before opening any panels.

3. Pilot Light Out or Electronic Igniter Failure
On older furnaces, a blown-out pilot light will prevent ignition entirely; on modern furnaces, a cracked or failed hot-surface igniter is the equivalent failure point. Either situation leaves the furnace unable to light the burners.
- Identify your furnace type: look through the sight glass or lower panel for a small standing flame (pilot light) or a glowing orange element during startup (hot-surface igniter).
- For pilot light furnaces: Follow the relight instructions printed on the furnace label. Turn the gas valve knob to PILOT, depress and hold it, then light the pilot with a long lighter. Hold the knob for 30 seconds after the flame catches, then turn to ON.
- If the pilot will not stay lit, the thermocouple is likely faulty (see Part below).

- Replace a failed igniter by disconnecting its plug, unscrewing one or two mounting screws, and installing the new part. Handle it only by its ceramic lead wires — body oils on the element shorten its life.

4. Dirty or Faulty Flame Sensor
The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that confirms a flame is present after ignition; when it gets coated with residue, it fails to detect the flame and shuts the gas off within a few seconds — a telltale sign is the furnace starting, then immediately clicking off. This is one of the most common service calls technicians make.
- Turn off power to the furnace at the power switch and shut off the gas supply valve.
- Open the furnace burner compartment panel (usually held by two screws or spring clips).
- Locate the flame sensor: a single metal rod with a porcelain insulator, positioned so its tip extends into the burner flame path. It connects to the control board via one wire.
- Disconnect the wire lead and remove the one mounting screw holding the sensor in place.
- Lightly buff the metal rod with a clean piece of fine steel wool or light sandpaper until it is shiny. Do not use abrasive compounds or cleaning sprays.
- Reinstall, reconnect the wire, close the panel, restore gas and power, and test for normal operation.

5. Furnace Not Blowing Cold Air Due to a Pressure Switch Problem
The pressure switch is a safety device that confirms the draft inducer motor is creating proper airflow before allowing ignition; a failed switch, blocked condensate drain, or cracked hose can prevent the furnace from firing even when everything else works normally.
- Look at the furnace’s error code indicator light (if present) — a pressure switch fault is usually displayed as a specific blink pattern described on the label inside the furnace door.
- Locate the draft inducer motor (a small motor at the top of the furnace that exhausts combustion gases). Listen for it running during startup — a grinding or absent sound indicates a motor problem.
- Inspect the rubber hose connecting the pressure switch to the inducer housing. Look for cracks, disconnects, or kinks. Reconnect or replace any damaged hose.
- On high-efficiency (condensing) furnaces, check the condensate drain line for blockage. A clogged drain can trigger the pressure switch. Clear the line by flushing with water or using a wet-dry vacuum at the drain outlet.
- If the hose and drain are clear but the switch still fails, test it with a multimeter for continuity. A switch that does not close when suction is applied requires replacement.
- Also check that the exhaust flue pipe is not blocked by debris, ice, or a bird nest — a blocked flue creates back-pressure that trips the switch.

6. Gas Supply Disruption or Faulty Gas Valve
If the igniter glows and the pressure switch closes but no flame appears, the furnace is not receiving gas — the supply may be shut off, or the gas valve itself has failed electrically or mechanically. Gas valve work beyond basic checks should be left to a licensed technician.
- Locate the manual gas shutoff valve on the gas line leading to the furnace. It should be parallel to the pipe (open); if it is perpendicular (closed), turn it to the open position.
- Check that other gas appliances in your home (water heater, range) are working. If nothing gas-powered works, contact your gas utility — the issue is with your supply line or meter.
- Inspect the furnace gas valve for a reset button (some models have one). Press and hold it for 3–5 seconds.
- Check the furnace control board for a fault code related to the gas valve or a “failed to ignite” lockout — a lockout requires turning the power switch off for 30 seconds to reset.
- If gas supply is confirmed and the furnace remains in lockout after resetting, the gas valve is likely faulty and should be diagnosed and replaced by a licensed HVAC technician. Do not attempt to disassemble a gas valve.
